Superb large cabinet size plate completely covered with hexagonal nail-head terminated clear calcite crystals. This is an unusual & highly collectible piece. Super clear ‘optical’ calcite is often referred to as Iceland Spar after its original location & has a very distinctive double refraction effect on light. Most Iceland Spar pieces are large cleavage fragments not crystals. This piece has the clarity of Iceland Spar combined with perfect hexagonal columns with flat ’nail head’ terminations - a genuine classic! It comes from a new discovery last year which produced lots of small pieces because of the fragile nature of the cavity lining. The back of the slab has indeed been coated with a thin layer of epoxy resin to reinforce it. in true MineraliumStore style I have sought out the largest examples of this unusual & distinctive calcite. I have come across a couple of very rare larger specimens where the calcite rind is still attached to matrix but these were being offered at thousands of dollars. This is a much more affordable piece which displays the characteristics of this unusual crystal form. It has a curved shape which makes it a very sculptural display piece. As for all calcites, give it some decent lighting & it will glow & sparkle for you. This was noted as a ’new find’ by my supplier in China. I have tried very hard to determine a locality but with no success. This is often the case when a supplier gets hold of new, unusual & highly collectible material like this.
