Wonderful silver pin featuring a rabbit waiter carrying a basket & tray with wine glasses. The rabbit has a facted emerald eye & is encrusted with marcasites. He is wearing a plique jour purple jacket with green trousers. The wine glasses are also purple. Plique–jour (French for letting in daylight) is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonn, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. This lovely little brooch is based on the iconic designs of Raymond C. Yard. His legendary rabbit waiter brooches have continued to delight & attract international collectors ever since their first appearance in the 1920s. (The original charming rabbit waiter would have been dressed in diamonds, with rubies, emeralds or sapphires & enamels, offering a tray of cocktails or a bottle of champagne. This appealed to Yard’s impressive high society clientele, including members of the Dupont, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt & Woolworth families as well as film stars Joan Crawford & Douglas Fairbanks). Marked 925. Weight is 9.61g. It is in great vintage condition. All my items are vintage & will show normal signs of previous wear. I add items to my little shop every week.
