The Aurora Morpho is named after the goddess of dawn in Poman mythology. Morphos are coloured in metallic, shimmering shades of blue & green on the upper wing surface. The female Morpho butterfly is less vivid than the male. The males wings reflect the bright, iridescent colour over an extremely wide angle, designed to maximize its visibility in the rainforest & intimidate any rivals that might fly into his territory. These colours are not a result of pigmentation but rather are an example of iridescence, an optical phenomenon, when colours produced vary with viewing angle. Not all Morpho butterflies have iridescent colouration, however, they all are decorated on the ventral side with ‘ocelli’ or eyespots & overall underside of the wings resembles foliage, with mottled brown, greys, blacks & reds.
