Drakes Island Beach is one of my favorite places in Wells, Maine. There are technically two beaches in one location, the larger one that spans from the jetty at the mouth of Wells Harbor all the way up to where it meets Laudholm Beach; & a smaller one that runs along the entrance to the Harbor & wraps around a small peninsula. Seals can often be spotted in the area. Preferring to avoid the busy summer crowds, I walk this beach often in the off-season, when the weather can be quite unpredictable. There’s often a steady breeze that blows from the sand dunes on the southern end of the beach where there are no houses to block the wind. Standing here, one can watch any bad weather approaching.
