I have altered this illustration in Photoshop by digitally restoring & skilfully enhancing it by removing imperfections in the paper & by applying a neutral grey/beige (some would call it ‘‘oatmeal’’), slightly antique-ed around the edges background - but this artwork remains true to the original. Original author of this gorgeous illustration is Pierre-Joseph Redout (1759 - 1840), a painter & botanist from Belgium, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies & other flowers at Chteau de Malmaison. He was nicknamed the Raphael of flowers & has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time. He worked from live plants rather than herbarium specimens, which contributed to his fresh, subtle renderings.
