1988 Royal Academy of Arts Poster, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Clowness at the Moulin Rouge 1887, artist gallery exhibition, wall art decor This exhibition poster is from the Royal Academy of Arts for an exhibition in 1988 featuring Toulouse-Lautrec, the graphic works. It features Henri Toulouse-Lautrec’s graphic art work, La Clownesse au Moulin Rouge or The Clowness at the Moulin Rouge from 1887 of Cha-U-Kao, one of the earliest female clowns. Dimensions: 30.3 in x 20.1 in (77 cm x 51 cm) Cha-U-Kao was a French entertainer who performed at the Moulin Rouge & the Nouveau Cirque in the 1890s. Her stage name was also the name of a boisterous popular dance, similar to the can-can, which came from the French words chahut, meaning noise & chaos. She was depicted in a series of paintings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Cha-U-Kao soon became one of his favorite models. The artist was fascinated by this woman who dared to choose the classic male profession of clowning & was not afraid to openly declare that she was a lesbian. Little is known about her life, including her real name, though she was a gymnast before she worked as a Parisian female clown or clownesse. Her clown performances included a distinctive black-and-yellow costume with her hair piled up on her head. Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist & illustrator whose immersion in the colorful & theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to produce a collection of enticing, elegant, & provocative images of the modern, sometimes decadent, affairs of those times. Toulouse-Lautrec is among the best-known painters of the Post-Impressionist period, with Paul Czanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin & Georges Seurat. What is special about exhibition & gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced. Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear & tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, & edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm. These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard-backed envelope for protection. They have been stored folded.
