Karel Svolinsk lithograph, produced for ‘Signature-A Quadrimestrial of Typography & Graphic Arts’ under the exacting standards of its editor, Oliver Simon. The lithograph was originally made in 1938 for a Czech publication but is here reproduced in its original form by the original publisher. Printed on Basingwerk Parchment. The detail reads as follows: ‘The Editor wishes to thank Mr Method Kalb, of the printing office of Prmyslov tiskrna, Prague, for his generosity in printing & presenting the inset of the work of Karel Svolinsk.’ The printing house was founded in 1922 by the Central Union of Czechoslovak Industry. Please note that the artist’s name is signed in the plate-it is not handwritten. Print run was limited to c.750 copies only. Karel Svolinsk (1896-1986) was a Czech painter, graphic artist, illustrator, typographer & creator of writing, set designer & also taught at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague (1945-70). in 1925, his ceremonial print of Macha Maya (for which he designed the original typographic font & created a number of illustrations) was exhibited at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris. in 2001, there was a major retrospective exhibition of his work in the National Gallery in Prague . Unmounted. Sheet size c.9.75x7.25 ins.. Further print to reverse-does not show through. Light sunning to extreme edges-will not show once mounted.
